THE RECOVERY CACHE

THE RECOVERY CACHE

What the Scientists Keep

You have walked past it a hundred times. The crate you never opened. The body you left cooling in a stairwell because the shooting had not stopped. The drop that came down two grids over while you were busy dying somewhere else.

None of it is lost. It is collected.

The scientists were never only guards. They are a salvage operation, and they have been working these monuments far longer than you have. They come through after the guns go quiet, and they are thorough, and what they carry out has to go somewhere.

It goes to a recovery cache. Deep desert, deep snow, chosen for being nowhere anyone would think to build. It stands only as long as it takes to fill. Then the crews move it, and the ground is bare again, and you would never know it had been there at all.

One of them is standing right now, or will be before the day is out. The island always knows when a cache goes up - a purple ring on your map, a yard you could be standing in if you left this minute. The crews have never cared that you can see them. They have never once been in a hurry to leave.

What guards it depends on when you arrive. Between runs the crews hold it themselves - you will see them on the walls, pacing the yard. When they are out working it holds itself: guns on the walls, guns on the roof, and every door locked behind them. The keys went out with the crews that locked them. Some days it is both. You will not know until you are close enough to be seen.

Crack it open and the crews stop packing and start shooting. Word travels - the whole island hears that a cache is being emptied - and the fort stands as long as the fight does. It will not pull out from under you while you are still inside it. That is not mercy. That is them deciding you are easier to kill than to outrun, and it means you will not be the only one who heard.

It was never built to be pretty. It was built so that nothing walks back out.

Everything inside it was yours once.

Come and take it back.

THE SCARECROW KING

THE SCARECROW KING

Keeper of the Long Dark

They will tell you not to walk the fields after dark. Ask them why, and the old ones go quiet.

Before the walls, before the guns, there was only the Harvest. A caretaker worked this land alone, and when the frost came for his crop he did what desperate men do - he struck a bargain with the thing that lives in the long dark. An endless harvest, perfect and unwithering. The price was his eyes, his name, and his sleep.

He stitched himself into straw and climbed the pole, and he has kept watch ever since. His crops never fail, because nothing is permitted to fail here. He holds the night long, because dawn would ripen his harvest past perfect - and perfect is the only price the dark will accept.

Cut him down and the sun comes back... for a while. But straw does not bleed, and straw does not die. It only waits, and counts the crows, and remembers your face.

He always comes back.

THE MUSHROOM BOAR KING

THE MUSHROOM BOAR KING

The Rot That Walks

Deep in the tree line, where the ground goes soft and the air turns sweet with rot, something feeds.

The trappers called it a boar once. It has not been a boar for a long time. The fungus took it the way the fungus takes everything down there - slow, patient, hollowing it out and moving in. Now it guards its grove like a crown, and what grows beneath its hooves grows wrong: mushrooms pale as drowned things, apples that never turn.

It does not charge like a beast. It does not tire like a beast. Empty a magazine into it and watch the wounds knit shut with grey threads. The old survivors say the grove is older than the island's curse - that whatever bargain was struck out in the fields, the rot in the woods was already here to answer it.

Break it, and the grove falls quiet. But the spores are already on your boots.

The rot is patient. The rot is always patient.

RUE MARSH

RUE MARSH

The Farmer of the Cursed Fields

Not every soul out here is a monster. Some are just stubborn.

Rue Marsh keeps a green patch in the middle of a killing world - crops that never wilt, hens that never die, a barrel fire that never quite goes out. Folks assume she's touched in the head, farming alone where the alphas roam. Folks are wrong.

She came to the fields the way the caretaker did, long ago - looking for a harvest that would hold. But where he gave his name and his eyes to the dark, Rue gave only her word: that she would tend the crop and keep the crows fed, and never ask what watches from the pole at the end of the row.

So the Scarecrow King suffers her. More than suffers her. Raise a hand to Rue or her flock and you'll hear straw shift in a field a mile off - 'Don't you hurt my Rue.' The hens will have you first, though. They always do.

Bring her your spoiled food and a little water and she'll work a small miracle: a seed with perfect blood, grown from rot and kindness. It is the only gentle magic left on this island.

You'll find her homestead out near the Ranch - watch your map for the green mark. That green dot is her patch of living land in a world gone to ruin.

She keeps her own ledger, too - not on paper, but she keeps it. Every soul who walks up to that fence is written down somewhere behind her eyes: who was decent, who was greedy, who raised a hand to her hens. Stand with her long enough and the farmer's door opens wider than it does for strangers. Ask her yourself - /myrue - and she'll tell you plain where you stand.

Be kind to the farmer. The farmer remembers.
